Although folklore regarding birthday gemstones varied from one culture to another, one single belief remained. The belief that wearing a birthstone in whatever form was good luck for the wearer!
Natural gemstones come to us free from any human interference; this means they have not been treated in any way. Gemstones are often treated to improve their appearance and durability, this does not include cutting or polishing, it means other forms of treatment which includes heat and radiation, diffusion, oiling or waxing, fracture filling and laser drilling.
Treated gemstones are still considered to be the real thing, however they are not natural. If we were able to obtain only naturally perfect stones, there would not be many of us who would be able to afford them. Treated stones are definitely more affordable, but before you purchase a stone, you may ask if it has been treated or not, and if so how, it may make a difference to whether you want to purchase it or not.
Not all natural gemstones are as valuable as others, they are a commodity and much as any other commodity based industry it is supply and demand which drives the price one way or another. For example the ruby; high quality natural rubies are rare and they are in great demand. However many of the places they are mined experience regular political turmoil; this reduces the supply and increases the demand, making them expensive.
Another red stone is the garnet, they are not rare and flawless stones are easily obtainable. But regardless of how gorgeous these stones are, they don’t cost nearly as much as a ruby.
Synthetic gemstones also have their place in the market, and although it doesn’t seem real that a gemstone can be created in a laboratory, they can. They contain exactly the same optical, physical and chemical make-up of their natural counterpart. Much like a test tube baby, it is the real thing, only created differently.
In days gone by it was much easier for gemologists to detect synthetic gemstones as they were too perfect to be natural. However with advanced technology an experienced jeweler can tell the difference. A good quality synthetic stone does not necessarily cost less than a natural stone, the process of manufacturing them is expensive, but as a rule they should be a little less expensive. A synthetic gemstone should be labeled as such, and not try to be passed off as a natural stone. In fact the origins of any gemstone should be made known to the purchaser.
If you are buying expensive gemstones, make sure they are purchased from a person or company you trust completely. This is particularly relevant for stones which are labeled natural, and the seller is asking top dollar. First read as much information as you can get your hands on and make sure you know what you are talking about. A knowledgeable buyer will always impress the seller and they won’t sell you something they shouldn’t.
